Each plane has two 750-gallon water tanks, which when full weigh 12,000 pounds. Two four-inch by six-inch probes, one at the bottom of each tank, open and allow water to be scooped into the plane as the plane skims the lake surface at 85 to 90 miles per hour. It takes eight to 12 seconds and approximately 1,000 feet to fill both tanks.
