Rest assured, the Boundary Waters and surrounding area are adequately protected against the possible outbreak of catastrophic fire due to the nearly 500,000 acres of trees downed by the July 4, 1999 storm. This summer, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has contracted with the Canadians to provide fire protection servicing an area which includes Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Manitoba, and Ontario. If need be, the water bombers will also respond to fires in both Dakotas.
