Sunrise

Sunrise in our eyes

Behold, the otherworldly view from our lanai at sunrise, what some on higher planes would refer to as "el swanko." It was at this point that we left our earthly pursuits behind, a point that was achieved only with much striving, including about 16 hours in various man-made conveyances, many glasses of American Airlines tomato juice, and one large bag of raisins. The gracious Hawaiian people would say mahalo (thank you). We say alkhaha (a nifty word that Mike made up).

Here is a shot of what it looks like just before the sun somes up.
Lighthouse

Kilauea Lighthouse

And so our pilgrimage began. After many minutes behind the wheel (it's a small island), we reached the Kilauea Lighthouse. Alas, we were not allowed to approach it as it was Veteran's Day and nothing can happen here on the Day of the Veteran. So we stood forlornly distant, watching tiny surfers smash themselves along the rocky shore, their severed arms and legs flying willy nilly. (Woody, is willy nilly supposed to be hyphenated?) P.S. There really weren't any surfers there. It just seemed the poetic thing to say.
Taro Ponds

Taro Ponds

Just north of the lighthouse are these taro ponds, which are filled with water like rice Patties (small wet girls who eat rice). Anyway, they are growing Taro here for an unknown reason, as no one seems to eat it.
Footprints

We left only footprints...

and several hunderd dollars...gosh stuff is expensive here. Therefore, we have decided not to buy any stuff, although we did buy a bag of Lay's Sour Cream and Chives chips and a can of Macadamia Nuts ($56). But the beach is great, albeit dangerous. The surf is very high, and lifeguards were standing by at every beach to slap you upside the head if you went in the water. Repeated announcement on the radio instructed surfers to stay away, which resulted in a large influx of surfers shortly thereafter.
Liz on the beach

Liz on the beach

...watching Mike take her picture. Dork city.

Oh, by the way. This is Hanalei Bay on the North Shore of Kauii, a breathtaking bay that has an enormous resort in the part of the picture where you can't see it. But it was very far away, so it didn't bother us. Looked more like a tiny pile of Legos than a real building so there.

...would like to write more but this is starting to feel like work, so it's time to go take a nap, or eat, or shop for over-priced stupid trinkets. BYE

Or see what's happening on Day 2.
